Remodeling a kitchen in a 1917 flat inevitably uncovers its share of surprises, like a hidden wall of original brickwork, something not seen often in a region known for it’s earthquakes. From the outset, this project was envisioned in two distinct phases: beginning with the kitchen and guest bathroom, followed by a complete reconfiguration of the upper level to integrate a primary bathroom and laundry suite.

Working within a building of this age requires a thoughtful balance between historic preservation and contemporary design, all while maximizing space as much as possible. The finished home stands as a character-rich testament to the beauty (and fun) of blending the old with the new.
